Why is it so hard? I think we throw those words around to much. I love Jesus, you love Jesus, we all love Jesus. But do I? Do you? I think i’ve posted on this at various times over the past year, but i can’t seem to get away from it. As I’ve been reading through the Bible over the past couple weeks I’ve been struck again by his great love for us. One of his names is Jealous. Over and over he tells Israel to set themselves apart and wholeheartedly follow him. I’ve also been reading some in Revelation. It’s all about the same thing. Jesus is a jealous bridegroom and he is returning to utterly destroy all that does not love him. It sounds pretty harsh for a God who is LOVE…but it does not contradict his love. He is perfectly just.

I was listening to a message recently that was talking about 4 dimensions of love.

the revelation of God’s love for us

our love for God

our love for ourselves (with God’s love)

our love for others

If we don’t first have the revelation of God’s love for us then we won’t truly reciprocate that love back to Him. And if neither of those happen we can’t really love ourselves as God loves us. And if we’re off on the first 3, how do we expect to love others? It’s so easy for me to get caught up in thinking about what God’s assignment is for me, whether it’s a missionary, or a businessman, or something else. And it’s all with the best intentions. While that is important, it’s not why he created me. He didn’t create me to get saved and then do good things for him. He created me to be a lover of Himself. “Now this is eternal life, that they would know you the one true God and Jesus Christ whom you sent.” (Jn 17.3) This is why he created me. This is the purpose of my life. I can serve Him the rest of my life, but as Matthew says, if i don’t know Him then none of the rest matters.

So i feel that this where I’m at. I feel like I can almost say what David said in Psalm 27, that his one desire was to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of his life and gaze upon his beauty. How my heart longs to do that. Now I’m trying to discover what that actually looks like on a day to day basis. I have no option but to press into that reality. My eternity depends on it.

We had a long night here and it kind of seems like a dream now. The baby for the most part was doing fine yesterday evening. Although after an hour or so after she would eat she would throw up. She was only 4 days old, so we don’t know if she had been keeping anything down since she was born. Jess said she seemed a bit dehydrated and we were glad we were going to be going into the hospil in the morning. We put her down last night and she slept pretty good and woke up around 2. Jess fed her and she sleep a little more. She was crying a few hours later and i held for a bit and then she seemed hungry. She was eating better then she had before and seemed to be keeping it down. Around 5 we laid her back in her bed and just a few minutes later she started to throw up again. Except this time it looked different and had a lot come out. Jess went out to get a change of clothes and when she came back in I thought she looked limp. Jess took her to check her vitals and she wasn’t breathing at that point. She turned her over and there was a lot more fluid that came out. She still wasn’t breathing so Jess started respiration and cpr. She worked on her for probably 20 minutes or so with no result. By that point we had called a teacher at our university who had brought the child over. They came over and we rushed to the hospital, but at that point it was to late. Jess thinks she must have had a more serious problem than anyone thought. They were concerned with her getting an infection, but Jess thinks she was probably taking fluid into her lungs and it eventually suffocated her.

We’re so sad to report this news. It was a rough night here and we’re asking God why he allowed this to happen. We trust that He has a greater reason and we know she is in a better place now. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers!

We have a new addition to our family a bit earlier than expected. We got a call yesterday from a lady connected with the foster care program in the city. They had a 4 day old girl dropped off at one of the orphanages and were looking for a foreign family to care for her. We agreed to take her in as long as needed until we leave. She was born with a disorder in which her intestines are actually outside her abdomen. This is usually quickly solved in the US by a surgery. But the system works differently here and now she is an orphan. If it’s taken care of quickly then there shouldn’t be any long term complications. We also think that she was probably a preemie.

We are meeting with another lady tomorrow and are going to the hospital. We’re not sure how things work here and how urgent they see this. We ask that you would pray for this little girl. We don’t know if she has a Chinese name, but we decided to call her Hope. She’s a beautiful little girl. Pray that the hospital would be able to get her in ASAP and that there would be no complications. We’ll keep you updated.

I’m not sure why it’s been so hard to keep this update the past few months. I think it’s a combination of traveling and having a lot on my mind that I don’t really know how to write about.

We made it back from Hong Kong late Sunday night. We had a great time with Ken and Anny and really enjoyed the conference. I think it gave them both a lot to think about and it also really rechallenged me. God is good and he is stirring the hearts of his people!

Check back tomorrow (hopefully) on our site for some pictures of our travels.
