Malachi has arrived!

Malachi Adam Leu made an early entrance into the world Monday morning at 3:04, weighing just 5 pounds 14 ounces!  He surprised us all with his timing, his size, and his gender!  Sunday evening my water broke at 7:30 and labor started just a half hour later.  I called to notify our midwife and she was on her way to another delivery!  She delivered that baby at 11:00pm and made it to our house by midnight.  After just seven hours of labor, Malachi was born!  Malachi is doing great, eating and sleeping great!  We are enjoying every minute and praising God for his provision, timing, and wonderful gift!

Visions of Pitocin

Well, I made it all the way to 36 weeks without any problems, but this past Monday my appointment with the midwife turned up a blood pressure reading of 140/90 ( a jump from 112/73 at my last appointment) and a urine dipstick reading with a positive protein.   I could tell by the midwife’s reaction that this wasn’t good.  I was told to hike up my protein intake to 150g / day to stave off pre-eclampsia.  She also put me on about five more natural remedies this week.  I went in for another appointment yesterday and talked to the other midwife.  From the reading I’ve done in my nursing textbooks and on the internet, they say there is no way to reverse this situation and that the only cure is delivery of the baby… inducing… with Pitocin… basically my worst nightmare.  So I asked her “Realistically, what are my chances of being able to deliver this baby at home?”  She said 90%.  As long as I’m asymptomatic (not getting headaches that aren’t relieved by lying down, epigastric pain, blurry vision, etc.) they are willing to go ahead with things as long as we are comfortable with it.  So pretty much all I think about now from the time I wake up till the time I go to bed is what I’m putting into my mouth.  I have a checklist of all the different herbs, teas, and stuff I’m supposed to be taking and we’ve stocked up on whey protein powder, milk, nuts, yogurt, and cottage cheese.  It’s worth a try.  If I were seeing an OB I can about guarantee they would have already scheduled me for an inducement.   So we are hopeful, and praying we can still have this baby at home.  The sooner baby decides to come, the better : )
